Far Infrared Sauna My Infrared Sauna isn’t just any ordinary sauna. Our sauna is a Solo Far Infrared Sauna that you lay down in versus the traditional alpine sauna that you sit in, possibly with other people. The beauty of an infrared sauna is that you can gain the benefits of sweating at much lower temperatures. This is important if you have been unable to tolerate the heat of a traditional sauna for very long. Infrared technology works with the natural energy in your body by warming your core temperature instead of just heating the air. Far infrared therapy is excellent for healthy glowing skin. ​ Why Is Sweating So Good For You? The question is then asked, what happens when a person uses a sauna and perspires or sweats at the rate of 1 liter per hour? Perspiring or sweating 1 liter of sweat in 1 hour would calculate to a Calories burned per hour heat loss rate of 580. Stimulation of the cardiovascular system takes place when a sauna is used. The average pulse rate of 75 beats per minute may increase to between 100 / 150 beats per minute during a 20-minute sauna session. The amount of increase is dependent on the temperature the sauna has been set at. As the pulse beat increases blood circulation increases but blood pressure does not necessarily increase, in fact blood pressure may even go down, especially in a healthy person. The reason for this is that the far infrared energy or heat has caused the tiny blood vessels in the skin to expand, thus accommodating the increased blood flow. Far infrared waves can penetrate the skin surface to a depth of about 6 cm. This results in a deep sweat normally attained through prolonged periods of rigorous exercise. Underlying toxins may be exuded from the deep sebaceous glands as well as the normal sweat glands. ​ It targets cellulite and burns it, it reduces water weight loss, increases metabolism, and burns calories. It is claimed that while the water lost may be gained again by the body, the calories lost will not be regained, unless of course you eat something like ice cream right after your session. ​ The far infrared heat that this sauna emits helps to relieve pain and increase circulation in areas that have been targeted. Many clients are using the sauna for pain relief, body detoxification, skin care, and a way to get a little workout in without actually working out (doing a 40 minute long session is like running a 2.5 mile marathon). ​ Far infrared heat penetrates deeper into your skin than regular body wraps do. As a result many clients see a decrease in cellulite. And the main benefits are calories burned — up to 800 per session with the combination of the wrap and sauna. During the Sauna how long to stay in a sauna depends on several factors. First, listen to your body and don’t over do it. If you’re new to using an infrared sauna, start with a lower temperature and stay in for maybe 15-20 minutes. But if you start feeling faint, claustrophobic, or anything else uncomfortable, by all means cut the session short or open the sauna for a bit. As you get used to the sauna experience, you will be able to tolerate longer and longer stays. An average sauna is about 25-40 minutes, but some people stay in as long as 45 minutes to an hour. If you have health conditions or are sick, keep the sessions on the lower side at first until you build up tolerance. When you first start to sauna with health issues (and please, check with your doctor first!), start at about 15 minutes, unless you’re able to easily tolerate more time. You might only be able to tolerate one session a week if you have health issues, and that’s fine. Work towards increasing time spent in the sauna and the number of saunas per week to about 30 minutes several times a week for the best overall benefit. Better to use your infrared sauna less than you anticipated at first than to overdo it and do yourself harm. ​ If you want to listen to music, feel free to bring your favorite CD. Your MP3 player will work too, but remember you’ll be sweating, so the unit and ear buds may get sweaty. After you’re done in the sauna, you are welcome to use our shower to take a warm to cool shower to remove sweat and toxins from your skin. If possible, avoid putting soap and especially lotion on your skin, which will only clog the pores you just cleansed. A cool water rinse will close up your pores quickly and leave your skin feeling incredibly and naturally smooth. You might feel the need to relax before getting back to your day. Listen to your body. A sauna is relaxing, so why not savor the invigorating and relaxing feelings for a while. ​ Tips to Remember: Sometimes medications we’ve taken get stored in fat cells. Some people say we have memories and emotions locked in our cells. As the infrared light penetrates your body and stirs up cells, you might experience old emotions or taste old medication. This is not abnormal and is what you want – to get rid of the stuff still in your body that should not be there. Talk to your Aesthetician about your home s kin care routine when booking your appointment. Let the Aesthetician know if you are using any retinoids or tretinoin products. If so, you’ll want to disco ntinue them for 3 days before your peel to avoid excess irritation. You’ll also want to avoid other cosmetic procedures in the weeks before your peel, so let your provider know if you are planning anything stronger than a facial. ​ 2. Protect yourself against a cold sore out break. Prone to cold sores? They’re very common and affect 80% of the population. Chemical procedures can trigger an outbreak, which is the last thing you want to deal with when your skin is peeling! Be sure and ask your Doctor for an antiviral to be taken several days before your peel in order to avoid getting a cold sore while your skin is already sensitive and may be irritated. If you need a prescription, let us know. ​ ​ 3. Take a break from your w orkout. ​ Peels cause a controlled, minor injury to the skin to stimulate the growth of healthy new skin cells. For this reason, it’s ideal to avoid sweating or heating your skin, as the peel application caused temporary inflammation and you don’t want to make it worse. You can safely practice gentle yoga (no hot yoga!) , stretch or take a walk, etc. as long a s you don’t break a sweat. Skip the swimming pool, hot tub and saunas until your skin is completely healed. ​ ​ 4. Show up to your appointment w ith a clean face and a hat. ​ If possible, wear minimal or no make up to your appointment, especially if you plan to peel the skin around the eyes. It’s not absolutely essential, but it will make your prep go quicker and easier. Makeup and other products affect the way the peel penetrates and even though your Ae sthetician will clean and prep your skin, it’s helpful to come with a bare face. Since you will not apply any products after the peel application (not even SPF), it’s a good idea to wear a hat on your drive homeor back to the office. ​ ​ 5. Follow instructions exactly. The Perfect Derma Peel has many happy patients of all Skin Types who use our products regularly. We’ve created a protocol that supports your process and results. Please be sure to read each step in the patient take home booklet and follow the recommendations. It is essential to use both Post Peel towelettes at home. It is equally important to use plenty of SPF beginning day two, and to use our special post peel moisturizer once the peeling begins. It’s essential to protect your skin from irritation during the exfoliation process, so no harsh products, AHA’s or tretinoin, hot water, scrubbing or clarisonic brushes. DO NOT pull at or remove peeling skin as this can cause scaring. Be patient! The dead skin will slough off when you wash your skin. The results will be worth it! If you’re not sure about something, or have any concerns, please call us directly for advice. ​ ​ 6. Avoid any important work or social plans on d ays 3-6 post peel. “Day 1” is the day of your peel appointment. Most patients look fine, if a bit sunburned, on the day of the peel, though they sometimes feel minor irritation. On Day 2, the skin may feel sensitive and tight, but make up can be used to hide any pinkness or blotchiness. Most patients peel visibly on Days 3-4 or even days 3-6, especially first timers, so it’s not the best time to go on a first date or make a major sales presentation at work. Instead, have your girlfriends over for dinner, a movie or game night, or curl up with that great book you’ve been meaning to finish. Since your skin will be more sensitive to the sun for at least a couple of weeks, don’t plan a peel right before a tropical getaway or other sunny destination vacation. If peeling before an important re union, wedding or other event, we advise having your peel 2 weeks or more before your event – even longer if it’s YOUR wedding! ​ ​ 7. Protect your skin and prolong your p eel treatment results with the right products. ​ To ensure the best possible results and avoid hyper pigmentation, be extra vigilant with daily use of a mineral broad spectrum SPF the first week post peel, and ideally for life. Make up with SPF added is not adequate protection by itself. This is the single most important thing you can do to enjoy healthy, beautiful skin for life, at any age.
